Dear Pastor,
I have this friend who is having some problems. He is 20 years old and he didn't graduate because he was unable to pay his fees. He had started to work with his uncle by doing trade work in tiling. His uncle is a foreman and he trained my friend for a while. Now he officially works with him and has been doing so for more than four months. His uncle sometimes pays him, $1000 telling him that he will give him the rest the following week. Right now, he owes my friend more than $5000.
He needs the money to buy food etc. because he is not rich. When he asked his uncle for the money, his uncle told him that the boss didn't pay him as yet and that he should go and sit down because he does not have any children to feed. This is nonsense. This man works and so he should get paid. He also says that his uncle uses the money to gamble and to give girls instead of paying him.
What can he do? He needs to live.
M.K., St. James
Dear M.K.,
Your friend should quit working with his uncle. He should try to get another job. He should demand his pay from his uncle. He can also report him to the Ministry of Labour. But perhaps he may not want to take that route.
