I WATCHED THE movie. I have read the reviews. I have seen the debates. After it all, what I need to know is, do people think a crucifixion is a walk in the bloody park? Hello everybody, if you nail a man to a cross and leave him to die, it is never going to be a pretty picture.
Sure, Christ died for our sins - if you are a Christian that is (by the way, am I the only person who finds it funny that the Jews are still waiting for the Messiah to drop by? Just curious) but it was in no way a feel good moment.
If we buy wholeheartedly into the Bible's account (Be honest, the Bible has to be taken with a grain of salt, whosoever wrote Genesis sure as hell was not around when the events recounted went down after all) of what happened at Calvary, Jesus was clearly not having a good time, so I tend to think that Mel Gibson, if not right on the money, was pretty close with his version of what happened in the last 12 hours of The Christ's life.
He got nailed to a cross and left to die for God's sake (I did that on purpose). Prior to this, he got the crap beaten out of him, was made to wear a crown of thorns and had a thief chosen over him when the Jews got to decide whose life would be saved. One would think that after a miracle or two he would have merited better treatment - then again, we all are humans (I hope) and we do the most screwed up things at the best of times.
This leads me to my next point. A number of protesters have stated that the film promotes anti-Semitism. In other words, hatred against Jews. This I find odd. Again, if we use the Bible as a benchmark - and please note that even Muslims acknowledge Christ as a prophet, albeit a minor one - well, they did play a large part in contributing to his death.
Choice
Sure, it was prophesied, and necessary if any of us are going to get to Heaven (Good luck there by the way), but the minute they were offered a choice between Jesus and Barrabas and they chose the latter, they effectively killed the former. And in much of the same way Germans are not really allowed to disavow the Holocaust and justifiably so Jews should not be allowed to deny their part in the crucifixion. That's just life and death as it turns out. Jesus Christ suffered like hell before he died and rose again, and for all those people born in Israel - actually, if one stops to think about it geographically, a few Palestinians should feel guilty as well this is not about hate. It is simply a matter of, well, fact. If you believe the Bible that is, both the old and new testaments. What inspired this particular tirade one might wonder - or maybe not. Anyway, it is Easter, so what better time is there to go off about a movie about a man who was allegedly nailed to a cross so people like me can get through the pearly gates and walk on streets of gold?
I am so going to hell.
