JLP must unite, or fall

THE EDITOR, Madam:

Until the JLP can work as a unified team and be seen by the public as such, it will not win the confidence of the electorate.

In the period since its defeat in 1989, the JLP has had more than its fair share of in-fighting. Interestingly, Mr. Seaga has been the central figure in most of these controversies.

At the national leadership level, I think that the Mr. Seaga has been largely unsuccessful in winning General Elections because, coupled with the autocratic style of leadership that he practises within his party, Edward Seaga does not possess the charisma of a Michael Manley or the likeability of Hugh Shearer. At the national level, charisma appeals to the voting public.

Historically, most of Jamaica's political leaders since independence have practised the democratic style of leadership within their own political parties.

Democratic-style leaders are inviting and accepting of the ideas and/or opinions of others. This is one of the key factors in keeping party members content and feeling as if they are contributing to the party's success. A democratic style leader also engenders and encourages teamwork as opposed to the 'My way or the highway' philosophy of leadership.

A political party whose officers are content and satisfied with the leadership style of the party leader will, in all probability, be more successful at the polls than a party which is perceived as being volatile and unstable. The PNP is perceived by the public as a party with a stable infrastructure.

In conclusion, I believe that it would be in the best interest of the JLP if Mr. Seaga were to name his successor and hand the baton over immediately. It would behoove the next leader of the JLP to adopt and wholeheartedly practise the democratic style of leadership within his party. In my view, this would be the first and perhaps most important step on the road to recovery for the JLP. To the JLP I would simply say, let history be your guide.
