By KANDRE' MCDONALD, Freelance Writer 'FINISH LINE - THE Champs After Party' that was staged at the Marketplace, Red Hills Road, St. Andrew last Saturday, should definitely not have been a teenage affair.
While the event was well supported by a young audience it was definitely not teenager-friendly, although most of them seemingly enjoying the vulgar vibes that was prevalent from deejays and selectors throughout the night.
At 1 a.m. pedestrian traffic was heavy on the outside as persons were still trying to get into the venue, while on the inside the Teflon selectors were 'running the turntables red'. They spun a number of R&B songs that went down well with the crowd. Prevalent around the venue were young men clinging on to their significant others, whether this person was temporary or permanent, and dancing up a storm.
The energy in the venue was overwhelming. When a selector from Teflon requested that a young female at the front of the stage area step forward and allow him to touch her breast she surrendered willingly.
The Teflon crew rounded off their set with a number of selections from Vybz Kartel's catalogue. Although these songs were verbally graphic in nature the young crowd was precise on the words, pitch and melody.
A 'stiff breast' contest followed and two young girls, who thought that they fit the request, went onstage to showcase their assets.
The first girl offered the second no chance of winning when she pulled down her blouse and advertised her breasts to the young audience. The other entrant declined to do the same despite being urged on by the now heavy flowing testosterone male patrons. She was booed from the stage.
The female who won received a gift voucher. Two other patrons also won gift vouchers of the same nature, the first for spelling 'Jamaica' correctly and the other for showing a tattoo along her spinal cord.
Sometime after things returned to the music one the sound system CD Master received a great response when the selector played a modified version of the 'Sponge Bob Square Pants' theme song as his introduction. During this set not much changed however as the selector resorted to some lewd phrases and a few expletives to get his audience going.
A few more selectors graced the turntables before Vybz Kartel took the stage at 2:40 a.m. The deejay, who has been branded as 'lyrically slack', was his usual self. However, he was the only person that offered a wise word to his young audience throughout the entire night: "When unno a listen Kartel song a nuh nutten, jus mek sure unno a study unu book," he requested.
The party ended sometime after 3:45 a.m. when Elephant Man left the stage.
