No bright future for cricket

THE WEST INDIES named pretty much an unchanged squad last week from which a team will be seleced to face the English later this week. It is troubling that with the embarrassing defeats in the last two Tests, the selectors have decided to stick with players who seemingly do not have the commitment nor the fight to at least eke out a consolation win on their home soil.

What is even more troubling is that even if changes are to be made, there are no obvious replacements waiting to assume positions that would have been made vacant by those removed from the Test squad.

It is abundantly clear though, that West Indies cricket is far from being out of the woods. The standard of the local competitions is tragically poor and there is little hope that they will produce any player of quality in the very near future.

The ridiculous ease with which the English have defeated the two teams they have faced so far in between Tests shows how grave the state of the region's cricket really is.

If the West Indies team is a reflection of the fortunes of the region, then we in the Caribbean have very gloomy futures to look forward to, and to make matters worse, there seem to be no workable solutions on the immediate horizon.
