MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA (AP):
A GUNMAN SHOT and killed a policeman Saturday morning, taking the officer's gun before fleeing the scene outside a bar in this tourist town on Jamaica's northern coast, police said.
Levine Garnett, 35, had been sitting with a friend outside a bar in Montego Bay when a man approached them and fired several shots at about 2 a.m. (0700 GMT), police spokeswoman Camille Tracy said.
Garnett was hit in the head, chest and neck. His friend, who was not identified by name, was hospitalized in serious but stable condition after being shot in the chest, Tracy said.
"Investigators have not yet come up with a motive for the killing, but we are following a number of leads," Tracy said. So far there were no suspects, she said.
Garnett lived in Montego Bay but was stationed with police in Savana la Mar, a town about 35 miles (56 kilometers) south, she said.
Fifth officer
He is the fifth officer to be slain this year on the Caribbean island of 2.6 million. Last year, 10 officers were killed in Jamaica, down from 16 in 2002.
In a separate case Saturday, police arrested a narcotics officer for allegedly shooting a former colleague at a crosswalk outside Montego Bay's international airport.
Shawn Johnson was charged with intentionally shooting and wounding Fabian Gordon, 43, while Gordon was driving a minibus, investigating officer Everton Grant said.
Johnson had accused Gordon of hitting him in the shoulder with his minibus, which Gordon denied, Grant said. The two then argued, during which Johnson allegedly pulled out his service gun which went off, hitting Gordon in the neck.
Gordon was hospitalised and in stable condition.
