By TEINO EVANS, Staff ReporterMUCH FLAVOUR AND vibrancy were again brought to the Mas Camp Village on Oxford Road, New Kingston, when the Bacchanal Jamaica held another juicy soca party.
Friday's event was in addition to a series of parties that the group has been having in keeping with carnival celebrations.
Dubbed 'A Luau a Luau Las Vegas style', many patrons turned out to have a great time, jumping, prancing, and gyrating to the sound of soca music provided by the Sparkles Disco.
As promised by the promoters of Bacchanal Jamaica 2004, patrons would be treated not only to some great musical juggling, but would also have the pleasure of live entertainment from various bands and artistes each Friday inside the Mas Camp.
Two surprises
On Friday, patrons were given two surprise performances from Surface, a band out of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as solo artiste Militant.
When Surface took the stage there was pandemonium in the crowd. They gave an energy-filled performance from start until the finish.
The band's front-line singers, Tony, Nicole and Terry, wasted no time in winning the participation of the crowd as they delivered lines like 'She bumpa catch a fire' and 'Put yuh hand in di air.'
Like most other soca bands or artistes from Trinidad they wanted to prove the stories they often hear about Jamaican men and women. So before going into another of their songs, one of the band's lead singers shouted, "Now I want to see if you have stamina -- what di ladies dem want? Now let me see yuh run and walk a mile and a half..."
Chaotic atmosphere
The atmosphere inside the Mas Camp Village was chaotic, as patrons followed these instructions closely, trying to prove that whatever these artistes from Trinidad heard about Jamaicans was true.
The band then gave patrons a sample of 'a Surface original tune for 2004' called 'Mash'.
"Now I know that Jamaicans love to dance, suh wi going to use wi feet and stamp out di evil," the band's front singer yelled, before he broke into a dance motion to match the song.
After a half an hour break, Surface re-took the stage and the Soca vibes immediately resurfaced.
At 1:30 a.m., Militant was welcomed on-stage, and he immediately went to work. However before Militant could get into one of his biggest hits to date, Passion, one excited patron yelled 'run di passion', as she had quickly recognized the rhythm intro for the song.
In closing the show, Surface did their version of Predator's song Mad, Sick, Head Nuh Good, intertwined with popular soca song Get Mad.
