Wolmer's Boys trounce Dinthill Technical

The Wolmer's team were all smiles following their 37-7 victory over Dinthill Technical on Monday. Team members, from left to right Charles Ball, Francois Douglas, Kevin Brown and Raemur Bedward (Captain). - Ian Allen

A POOR PERFORMANCE by Dinthill Technical enabled Wolmer's Boys to move into the next round of the TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz competition as the second round continued last night.

The match ended in favour of Wolmer's Boys 37-7.

Dinthill never posed a serious challenge to Wolmer's Boys who had two supporters waving flags in the studios of TVJ for a short while after the game. In fact, the only time Dinthill seemed to be in the match was during section one when they got four points. For the next two sections, they could only amass three points.

When the match begun, Dinthill, from St. Catherine, were more unsettled than their Kingston opponents. It was not until the 10th question that they got on the scoreboard and at that time the scores read 6-1 for Wolmer's. When the section ended the scores read 10-4 in favour of Wolmer's as Dinthill struggled to settle.

During the break, Wolmer's lost and gained a point to resume section two with the same number of points. Wolmer's lost a point after a music question was disallowed. The question was an audiovisual one and Wolmer's answered correctly. However, when Dinthill's question was asked no visual appeared although they answered incorrectly. After some debate, the question was scrapped by the judges. However, Wolmer's gained a point after the judges accepted an answer for a mathematics question previously ruled incorrect.

In section two, Dinthill's performance worsened and any hopes the audience might have had that Dinthill would have closed gap, soon faded as they failed to collect a point from 10 attempts in the first minute. Dinthill repeated this performance in the second minute although their opponents amassed only two points from 10 questions.

The third minute saw Dinthill putting up some fight and they were able to collect three points although their opponents received seven. The scores at the end of section two read 23-7.

After section two, the match was over for Dinthill. Although attempting to answer questions, they were continuously beaten to the buzzer by Wolmer's Boys. In fact, they failed to add to their scores and when the section ended the scores were Wolmer's Boys on 37 and Dinthill Technical on 7.

After the game, Christopher Pitterson, coach of Dinthill Technical blamed his team's poor showing on inexperience.

"It's inexperience that affected our performance. It's our first time in the second round and so we were a bit nervous. We hope to do better next year," he said.

Nicholas Earle, coach for Wolmer's said his team played well. However, he had reservations on some sections of the match.

"We played quite well. We faltered in the second minute and so I think we could have done better in that respect. But overall we did well," he said.

TEAMS: Wolmer's Boys: Raemur Bedward(captain), Kevin Brown, Francois Douglas and Charles Ball.

Dinthill Technical: Andre Hanson (captain), Cornell Bent, Peter-John Rowe and Renee Campbell.

In the next match, Brown's Town will oppose Camperdown High.
