The real 'tourist police'

JACKASS SEY DI worl' no level. Jackass sey im see how touris' police business really wuk.

So, it is - or was - Spring Break one more time, with one whole heap of college students coming to Jamaica to have a good time.

Fair enough.

So, to beef up the security presence and stop the crusty Jamaicans from harassing the poor little tourists, some police personnel were sent to the resort areas to keep an eye out.

Fair enough. Apart from one 'leetle' problem.

A couple of the cops had their eyes more on the Spring Breakers than the security situation.

One cop, the newspapers reported, made unwelcome phone calls - many of them - to the place where one particular female Spring Breaker was staying and it was reported. One cop was accused of going even further. He allegedly made an approach on a young female visitor and, when he was rejected, proceeded to beat the crap out of not only her but also a couple friends of hers.

Big problem. Bureau of Special Investigations gets called in and the copper, all the way from Manchester, is hauled up forthwith.

But hold on one cud-chewing, hee-hawing second. This is not level at all. Jackass smells an uneven patch on the ground. Sniff, sniff, what is it?

Aha! The Bureau of Special Investigations did the deed on this cop quite quickly, but when it comes on to the shooting and maiming of Jamaicans, they can be remarkably slow. And then, when the BSI does do their job and hand over the matter to the courts, it is another whole long time before anything happens.

Do you remember Braeton, seven inna one? Hmm. Why the front an' back foot is it that Jamaicans cannot be accorded the same official respect that is given to visitors? Why is it that policemen who shoot Jamaicans under very questionable circumstances are taken off front line duty for quite a long time before there is an effective investigation, while a cop who allegedly slaps around a couple tourists is put on the fast track to justice?

Jackass has always contended that if we treated Jamaicans as nicely as we treat tourists, then we would have a much better country. By far. In fact, when you look at it, tourists do not even get very nice treatment. They are simply treated as human beings should be. It is us who, by and large, are battered and bludgeoned, literally and figuratively, without any significant repercussions.

Not too long ago, when the harassment of tourists was hitting the resort areas especially hard, the tourist police came into being. Jackass looked at the situation and said "damn, if these people would just try to protect Jamaicans this much"!

But lo and behold, they send in the cops who are used to dealing with Jamaicans and see the result? What then, does that say for how the police treat Jamaicans, who have no tourist money for the government to protect?

Cho.

Jackass sey di worl' no level. Jackass sey if yu a no touris' come een like police can do yu whe dem feel like eena Jamaica.
