A new set of drug dealers?

THERE WAS AN interesting story in yesterday's edition of THE STAR in which a man who pleaded guilty to attempting to exporting cocaine made a rather surprising revelation.

As the story reported, he said he had come to Jamaica from the United Kingdom on vacation and, while sitting in a bar with friends in Clarendon, he met some men with whom he became very good friends.

It was revealed that when the time came for him to go back to the U.K., he visited the men to bid them goodbye, when he was held at gunpoint and forced to ingest cocaine. But not only that, he was then escorted to the airport by the men who made sure he went to the check-in counter and did all that was necessary until he was eventually held.

We are not saying that this man's story is true but a police officer has confirmed that such incidents are, in fact, happening. Amazing. So now not only do we have to be aware of what is packed in our bags when we are travelling abroad, now we have got to be aware of the people we meet.

In all of this who is the loser? Yes our precious, lovely and beautiful little island. Jamaicans, it seem, will stop at nothing when it comes to illegal and illicit activities, not realising that in the final analysis, the country and we, its people, will be the one to suffer.

Who came up with these ideas? How did they come up with it? Don't these people realise they could be of good value to the society and the country if they put their creative minds to something positive?

We hope the authorities are doing whatever they can to stem this new method the drug dealer have employed. But who know, maybe as soon as they do, the dealers will find another way. We'll just have wait and see.
