'Death before dishonour' Clash of the sound titans

Tony Matterhorn - File

WHEN THE OLYMPIC Games is launched in Athens Greece this summer, following the Jamaican team may be a local sound system.

The sound system that will get this chance will first have to come out victorious over four other sound systems on Easter Monday.

This clash, called 'Death Before Dishonour' is scheduled for Pier One in Montego Bay, and will feature some of the more notorious clashing sound systems in the business.

Last year, Kilamanjaro, Rebel Tone from Canada, Bass Odyssey from St. Ann, Montego Bay's own Madd Squadd, Mighty Crown from Japan, and Tony Matterhorn squared off for the title. Tony Matterhorn walked away with the bragging rights for that clash after six rounds of clashing.

This year however, things will be a bit different. For one, the sound systems are different. There will be Mighty Crown, Poison Dart, Black Kat, Bass Odyssey, Tony Matterhorn, and Ricky Trooper's outfit, Sound Trooper.

Business as usual

Speaking with last year's champion Tony Matterhorn, clash audiences can expect business as usual from him this year.

"Yu know seh so far I don't have any plans, I am just going there with an open mind," Matterhorn told THE STAR recently.

"They are there to try and stop me, but mi beat all a dem already, they are duppies to me, so how can I kill what dead already?"

For Matterhorn, defending his title is the greater reward than the prize of travelling to Greece with the team. "The prize not too seriously matter right now, but mi know dem can't win no matter what they do," he said of his competition.

Presently, Matterhorn leads a hectic schedule, running from session to session during week nights and on weekends. These he says have not affected his preparation for his title defence.

"Right ya now a just God a lead mi. From last year we made people start to leave their homes to go out and have fun. We made uptown people come to downtown sessions without fear. I am comfortable with my juggling, but I will not give up my title that easily, not so."
