Street dance list gets longer
Patrons dancing at one of these dances. - Carlington Wilmot THE LIST OF popular street dances just got longer. Stepping on to the ballooning list of Kingston's street dances is 'Early Mondays', a short spicy session held in Standpipe every Monday. The session has been getting a steady supply of supporters both from within and outside the community since its arrival on the dance scene in late December last year, both from within and outside the community. It has also been featured on at least two Corporate Area cable channels. Although it may sound like a regular street dance, what stands out for Early Mondays is that everything happens within a few hours, so the session is not drawn out too long. For this reason, patrons can whet their appetite for dancing from 6 p.m. to midnight, and then head out to Hot Mondays or any other dancehall event afterwards just when these events are getting heated. The set-up to Early Mondays is similar to Passa Passa in Tivoli Gardens. The Sound System is set up just before a shop and bar, and patrons dance in the street while they support the bar and the ones nearby.
Immense popularity
'Knot up', the proprietor for the shop where it is held told THE STAR that the birth of Early Mondays was quite coincidental. "Is a dance we was putting on in the December, so we used to have the sound system a play pon the shop front," he explained recently. "We do that bout two Mondays in a row and get good support, so we start hold it every Monday," he added. In its growth, the session has attracted the presence of different sound systems and selectors who from time to time give their endorsements. Among them is Tony 'Mental' Matterhorn, and selector Meastro of Swatch International. With Early Mondays now on the calendar, it joins the list of dances which have attracted immense popularity and support from the dancehall crowd. On this list are sessions like Hot Mondays, formerly of Hagley Park Road, Jiggy Fridays held in Arnett Gardens, and Passa Passa held in Tivoli Gardens.
