THERE WERE GOALS galore at the Elliston Wakeland Centre in Trelawny yesterday.
Village United outscored St. Mary's Star Cosmos 4-2 to keep pace with the top teams in the Wray and Nephew National Premier League.
The home team raced into a 2-0 lead through strikes from Daniel Ricketts in the seventh minute and Fabian Dawkins in the 10th. Thinking that they were out for a stroll, Village eased off the accelerator and Andre Lawson of Cosmos fired his team back into the game with a 37th minute goal.
Twelve minutes into the second half Village restored their two-goal lead when the impressive Ricketts dribbled his way down the left flank and created an easy opportunity for Ian McAnuff. He duly converted.
Despite facing an uphill task, Star Cosmos never allowed their heads to drop and they went at their opponents. In one such move the strong Dwayne Gopalsingh with a man tugging at his shirt managed to get off a low, firm shot which goalkeeper Elvis Hart blocked. Immediately after that, a scuffle developed between Village Central defender Preston Bernard and Star Cosmos Kurt Edwards. Goalkeeper Hart also got involved and all three were issued with yellow cards by referee Peter Davis.
Star Cosmos' fight was to bear fruit in the 78th minute when Gopalsingh reduced the deficit to one.
Any thoughts of a point or even all three by Star Cosmos were soon erased. Substitute Shane Crawford missed a chance two minutes later with just the goalkeeper to beat.
Dawkins followed up Crawford's miss almost immediately with one of his own.
He made amends a minute later by blasting home a pass from Ricketts on the second attempt.
